Review

Well, I had my review today for my new position! And what a great day this is!

And isn't it funny, that I got a glowing review. I find it odd that I had the exact same work ethic, skills, etc. and never got a glowing review in accounting. It was a horrible experience every year; I dreaded it with EVERY part of me: it was unnecessarily negative, non-productive and stressful. I wouldn't sleep beforehand and would have hives for an entire day. All for nothing.  And I knew all along that it was them and their process and negativity, and not mine. I always held on to that. I know myself, well.

Better job, better boss, better review...life is just better, you could say. SO MUCH BETTER!!!!!!!

Do something nice: Six tips for good deeds that take less than five minutes

Last year, I read a great book. Gretchen Rubin is the best-selling writer whose book, The Happiness Project, is the account of the year she spent test-driving studies and theories about how to be happier. I now follow her happiness blog!  I love, love this post below and wanted to share it! (I put a few things in italics...)

**************************************************
“Do good, feel good” is one of the great truths of happiness -- but you may be thinking, “Sure, good deeds would make me happy, but I barely have time to get through the essentials of my day. I don’t have time to do any good deeds!”

Wrong. Here are some ways that you can help other people—and make yourself feel great, at the same time—in under five minutes.

1. Be friendly. I've decided that there are five degrees of social interactions with strangers: hostile, rude, neutral, polite, and friendly. I find it very difficult to be downright friendly to strangers, but I always find myself energized and cheered by a friendly interaction. It only takes an extra minute to exchange a few pleasant words, but it makes a real difference. (Other people that can be constantly neutral to others all the time at work totally freak me out. You can't ever acknowledge I'm right in front of you? Weird! I try to be friendly and I think most people here do. I guess it's our Midwestern roots.)

2. Say “yes.” If you can, and if you should, say “yes.”

3. Say “no.” My sister, who is a TV-writer in Hollywood, once told me, “'Yes' comes right away; ‘no’ never comes.” Meaning, for example, that when she’s pitched an idea, if she doesn’t hear “yes” right away, it means they don’t like the idea. I’ve found this precept to be widely true. In many circumstances, we find it hard to say "no" — partly because it will hurt someone’s feelings, partly because it closes a possibility that could otherwise remain open. But waiting to hear "no" saps people’s energy by keeping them hoping for an answer they aren’t going to get. If someone is waiting for your “No,” put them out of their misery. (Umm, this info would be super useful if guys would use it in the dating world consistently. I could have had a lot of sleepless nights back from my twenties!)

4. Sign up on the national organ-donor registry. This takes no time at all, and the consequences could be HUGE! Tell your family that you signed up, too. Remember, the one minute that someone takes, right now, to sign up on the registry might save YOUR life six months from now. And vice verse. (I did this! I feel great about it! Go to Bethematch.org and sign up today.)

5. Lead them not into temptation. It can feel generous, friendly, and fun-loving to urge people to take another piece of cake, to drink another glass of wine, or to make an extra purchase, or to urge them to give themselves a break by skipping the gym, skipping class, or quitting smoking next week instead of today. But when you see people truly trying to resist temptation, encourage them to stick to their resolutions. The Big Man and I always encourage each other to go to the gym. It can feel a little Spartan, but in the end, we’re both much cheerier when we’ve exercised.

6. Do someone else’s chore. Don’t you sometimes wish that someone would do one of your little jobs? If nothing else, to show an awareness of the fact that you faithfully do it, day after day? Emptying the diaper pail or starting the office coffee-pot, even though it’s not “your” job, helps people feel appreciated and cared for. One of my Twelve Commandments is to “Spend out,” which reminds me not to keep score, not to focus so much on everything coming out even – like chores.  (Mr. Awesome is so good at doing this. He cleaned the house last weekend while I had all three girls all day at the mall. He cooks, I clean, that's the deal; but it was so special when he did my "chores" just because! And well, I could cook, but I'm not sure that would be doing anyone a favor...??)

Cruise Director funny

I haven't had much of any time to blog lately, boo hoo! The fire contents, wedding and having all three kids last weekend, along with a tenant in on Tuesday at work, have been taking all of my time. It has been h-e-c-t-i-c. But good hectic, with lots cooking!  This pretty much sums up my weekend with the kids:

"By a typical Sunday night, I’m out of ideas. I’m not a f*ing cruise director and there’s only so much entertaining I can do, crafts I can oversee or errands I can drum up to burn off time. By last Sunday night, I’d done it all: playdates, a birthday brunch for my friend (with two toddlers on my lap for an hour and forty five minutes), a sleep-over where we made pizza, popped popcorn and colored the sh*t out of every available piece of paper in the house I even braved a bookstore; So by Monday morning I was tired. But I had three kids who were looking at me like I had the schedule for the Lido deck etched on my forehead..."

Hahahaha!!! Cruise director!! That pretty much explains my weekend. That was a quick steal from another favorite blog of mine, baby on bored.

I have lots of ideas brewing of lovely things to write about, just need to find the time...but life is good! Just wanted to post a little funny to get through the week...:)

Link Post

Hope everyone is surviving the first week back to work...I'm slowly getting back in the swing of things! All of Christmas is down but the tree, which isn't even ours. The bathrooms have been bleached and scrubbed, as is my New Years tradition. The mornings have been brutal but then I feel good once I'm all clean and dressed up and on my way.

This post resonated with me...thought you might enjoy!

It's Time

The fire was one month ago today; one month, 31 days...a small lifetime.

I woke up one month ago today not knowing where my family would sleep that night. Not knowing what clothes we would wear. We woke up in the pajamas that we went to bed in the night before, and that was all that we owned. After three hours of sleep, I got in the shower. Threw on some borrowed makeup and the previous night's clothes. No time like the present; I had no idea what the day would bring but no sense in putting it off.

We woke up to our house on fire splashed all over the TV, and it felt like a dream. We were staying at Ian's parent's house. My mom and sister came there, my sister with a bag of her clothes for me. I've never been so glad to have a sister in my entire life. Pants, shoes, coats, makeup, almost identical to my own. We often will buy the same shirt in a different color.  DNA is funny like that. The bag of clothes breathed a little life into me. My mom came with an envelope of money from the Williamsport Christian Church. Quite a lot of money. How did they know? How did they get it to her in time to get to me? I grew up in that church from the time I was born. On one of the most challenging days of my life, they found a way to help my family.

The three of us took the money and set out to Target, to start rebuying everything. Putting the first item in the cart, the weight of what we were facing hit me like a ton of bricks. Without my mom and sister I would have turned around and walked out. We filled a cart. It only put a dent into replacing what we had, but it was a start.

I made it through the day. The next day. The weekend. Went back to work.

We saw the kindness of countless friends, coworkers, strangers, family and retailers. Too many to even count. Above and beyond what you could ever imagine. We accepted their charity, humbled by the experience and vowed to pay it forward someday, in some way.

We found Christmas, found the energy to pull it all together. Burned the midnight oil to give the kids a good Christmas, even though in the back of our minds we were thinking of insurance, cars, endless contents lists, the future. We put it all on hold to make it special. I saw 3 and 4am for the first time in a long time, several times. But we pulled it off.

We celebrated the New Year, with a special trip to Bloomington to get out of town. We had a great time, visited my old haunts, had a fun time with friends. We were more than happy to ring in 2011; a new year.

We have accomplished a lot in the last 31 days. We have been blessed. God willing, the next 365 days will hold very special moments for my family. This is a big year for us. Big, big. I'm ready for it. Que sara. Bring it on.
