This song makes me think of you, and 6.4.2011. I love you. Thank you for another year together. ♥ ♥ ♥ xoxoxoxo
When the rain is blowing in your face
And the whole world is on your case
I could offer you a warm embrace
To make you feel my love
When the evening shadows and the stars appear
And there is no one there to dry your tears
I could hold you for a million years
To make you feel my love
I know you haven't made your mind up yet
But I would never do you wrong
I've known it from the moment that we met
No doubt in my mind where you belong
I'd go hungry, I'd go black and blue
I'd go crawling down the avenue
There's nothing that I wouldn't do
To make you feel my love
The storms are raging on the rollin' sea
And on the highway of regret
The winds of change are blowing wild and free
You ain't seen nothing like me yet
I could make you happy, make your dreams come true
Nothing that I wouldn't do
Go to the ends of the earth for you
To make you feel my love

Baby free and happy!
Is it awful to say how much I enjoyed my childless day yesterday? Is it horrible, awful, and sinful to confess the absolute nirvana of a day that I had yesterday, sans children???
Because if it is, you may want to stop reading this right now.
I love our kids. I do. I think there is evidence of that in the fact that I do lots of crafty things and we have adventures together, and I breastfed baby Lauren for 10 months. TEN MONTHS. So....I think that entitles me to a day where I do things that do not involve making waffles and bottles at 8am.
So there I was, awake at 9:15 yesterday with...wait for it....NO KIDS!!!!!!!! That's right folks, I am the proud owner of ONE day with no LITTLE PEOPLE!! Oh, the deliciousness of it. I want to sing a song to the heavens. I want to do a little dance, make a little love....the best things in life are freeeeee....sleeping! sex! shopping! Ok, shopping isn't free, but I hauled in some major gift cards so in this case it actually was. The only other best thing in life is sunshine, but it's winter so hitting 3 out of the 4 big ones is a glorious thing. Yes, I know that it is totally awkward that I said "sex" in this blog when there is a chance that maybe our family reads it, but we have a kid folks. The jig is up on that one. We're, like, in our thirties.
So anyway, back to my day!! A quick rundown of things that I did, and also did NOT do:
Drank coffee while enjoying lovely new Adelle CD and cataloging gift cards and making lists. Oh how I love a good list. Did not dodge baby Lauren's attempts to grab coffee cup, and was actually rested, so was not furiously gulping it for dear life. Coffee, my drug, I heart you!!
Watched the Kardashians on demand. Why have I not watched this show before. I love you crazy Kardashian girls!!
Went back to sleep after my lovely morning, for several hours. In the middle of the day. Because I was tired. And it. was. HEAVEN!! Sleep, my friend, how I have missed you. You make me so happy.
Then on to shopping! Lounging in the aisles, wasting time....browsing....NOT on the clock, rushing home for bedtime ritual with cranky, sleepy baby. I literally crossed paths with the same Target saleslady approximately 3 to 4 times. She thinks I am crazy and she's looking at me weird, but look on lady, look on. Debate the merits of several shampoos and other products. Target, my friend, we meet again.
Come home tired and happy and put my house and all of my treasures in order. We now have art on the dining room wall. It only took over a year. Admire my house. House, you are sparkly and clean!! I love my house! I love life!!!!!
Plug in my new Wii fit. It proceeds to tell me I am obese and out of shape after several assessments. Ian is laughing so hard, he said it is the best $110 he has ever spent because that is just funny. Whatever, if he got on the damn thing, we agree that it would blow smoke and just curl up and die. But I am in such a happy fog that I don't even care my new machine told me I should weigh 124 pounds!! Spend the rest of the night playing new Wii crap - I outshoot Ian AGAIN with new hunting game - Dear God I am such a sharp shooter!! I did know that I had this talent!! Watch Ian play with his star wars light saber that I searched the entire north side for. Dodge his saber as he kills wookies and I fold laundry. He is 9 years old again. :)
At 3am, I crash into bed after reading my new organizing magazine. I drool over organized linen closets and craft rooms that all involve remodeling our house. The day is done. My single self came alive for one day. I was selfish with my time because it was all my own. Thank you parents, it was my very favorite Christmas present. :)

4 Christmases in 2 days: Part 2
Christmas Day!!!
7:45am: My baby's first Christmas!!! Err...she won't really know it, but I will. It's just Lauren this year; the big girls are with their family. I'm thinking, why didn't I play Santa last night. Oh yeah, that would be because I was too busy getting drunk with Mr. Awesome. The holidays make us all happy and lovey and we do things like staying up until the wee hours of the morning that we wouldn't normally do. Which brings me back to why I'm searching for batteries, running to the trunk in the snow, and going to my closet to pull together the big first Christmas spread!
8:30am: I tell Ian that I don't care if it is for 15 seconds, we are going down as a family to give Lauren's presents to her. Proceed to her crib, where I coo and tell her, "Merry Christmas babeeee girl!!!" I think she really just wants her milk and clean pants, but whatever. Downstairs. Mommy elation!! My baby is a big girl. She gets big girl toys. Her first basketball goal. I'm caught between wanting her to be a professional ice skater and the next WNBA star, but it can't hurt to give her the chance to start her hoops career at an early age. Ian and I secretly want to play with it ourselves because it doesn't count numbers back at us or colors in an annoying loud sing-songy voice, and because we can throw miniature orange balls at it. She chews on the ball. Ian was right. He said she would do that. He wanted to get her a stack of remote controls and old cell phones and pile them up under the tree, but I think my spread is much better!! After his promised 15 seconds, daddio is back in bed.
12:00am - We have nursed our massive hangovers as best as we can and we are headed to my mom and dad's house, sparkly presents in tow. We arrive and I start devouring meatballs and hot tasty appetizer things with a vengeance. With a glass of egg nog in hand (I briefly consider how many carbs are in it and I almost vomit) we tackle the mountain, and I do mean Mt. Everest size mountain of presents. Lauren is the first grandchild and my sister's one and only niece. Dear God, we need a u-haul to haul our loot home!! Family, you went overboard!! Everything is glorious!!!
5:00pm - We have hit the parent jackpot. Grandparents have asked to keep baby Lauren. After half-joking to leave the formula from CVS in the mailbox, we skid out of parking lot, with visions of sleep and more sleep dancing in our heads. Freedom. Sweeeet Freedoooooom!!!!!!!
6:30pm - Arrive at grammy's adult Christmas party. Guzzle many glasses of champagne and enjoy crab legs and some kind of fancy meat with a veal reduction sauce. Watch her single friend invite Cliff to try out her yoga studio and almost fall out of my chair over the ludicrousness of her invite, from sheer exhaustion and the buzz from the champagne.
10:30pm - We. survived. four. Christmases. in. two. days. Thank you everyone!!!!!!!!!!! We have wonderful, wonderful family. I'm going to bed for a week now, goodbye...........................

4 Christmases in 2 days: Part 1
We have survived the first leg of the marathon: Two down, two to go. It went a little bit like this...
Day one - Christmas Eve:
8:00am - Roll out of bed. Crap, overslept by one hour and had extremely weird dream where I traveled through space or something. Where am I? Ok, focus: go fry some sausage for the mushrooms. Downstairs - hit coffee button to brew already loaded machine. Proceed frying sausage...pluck mushrooms out of stems...mix in sour cream...how does a recipe with 3 ingredients take a 1/2 hour to make. Ok, there's Olivia - coming down the stairs like the little blondie in the Grinch that stole xmas.
10:00am - We're all ready. Christmas outfits on, we're shiny and clean...ready to go.
2:00pm - Holy crap, Lauren hates people. And there are 30 of them here. There's no place to take a nap in this joint! Stop trying to eat the paper!! Get scratchy adorable xmas dress off. That helps.
2:30pm - Have reached the point of no return with 11 month old who has not had nap. Load gifts, get coats, brave cold - one down, one to go!
6:00pm - Here we go again. We've napped. Load car. Bathed Lauren after she pee'd all over changing table and Christmas dress. Christmas jammies on - at this point, I would put her in a sack if it fit her. Vroom, vroom over to nana and papa's.
8:00pm - Lasagna dinner...delicious! Now, GIFTS! Woohoo, thank you everyone! Sephora gift card....glooooorious!!! Wii Fit - thank you Mr. Awesome!!
9:30pm - Load car. Go home. Lauren in bed. Daddy and mommy time. Watch Bad Santa...annual tradition. Raspberry vodka and diet tonic. Rinse, repeat...repeat...repeat...repeat....
3:00am - crap. CRAP!!!!!!!!!!

Ice skating!
Yesterday we took Audrey and Olivia ice skating for the first time. The last time I ice skated was almost 10 years ago, so it was an adventure! Every year during Christmas break from college, my friends and I would get a big group of friends together. We would hang out at someone's house and then spend the afternoon goofing off and ice skating together. It was scary and fun, but I was so in shape at the time it didn't really phase me. THIS time was a bit different. After we had our skates strapped on, there was that moment where it was every man for him or herself...and I thought, oh wow, this is either going to be VERY BAD or VERY GOOD! Stepping out on the ice was terrifying. I thought - I have busy season all of January, and they aren't going to care if I break every bone in my body - they will still want me to show up at work and account.
But we survived! The kids were very brave. I was praying we wouldn't have terrified kids refusing to skate or broken bones. I was very proud of our little bear cubs. They pawed their way out there, clung to the wall for dear life until they got their footing and they were on their way! I was pretty proud of myself for not dying as well. I mean, there were little 5 year old kids out there with their $300 skates on swinging hockey sticks. It was intense. I survived with one major elbow injury and some sore muscles I didn't know I even had this morning.
Side note: Every time I step onto an ice rink, I secretly feel like Nancy Kerrigan or Kristi Yamaguchi. I am transported back in time to the winter Olympics, watching Oksana Baiull going for gold. In my head, I could launch into a tripple sow cow or sit spin at any moment. Why does this never change, no matter how old I get?
I hope you all have your Christmas shopping done. YIKES. I have many treasures left to scurry out and buy. Four days until Christmas!!!! Happy shopping!!
Love, ♥ V :)

It's Saturday morning, and Ian and Lauren are up nestled in their beds while I'm enjoying some me time! Lauren is down for her nap, after returning from her first overnight sleepover at Nana and Papa's. It was a big accomplishment for me to let her go! Ian and I had a glorious date night last night after the Simon x-mas party. And this morning I got a pedicure at 9am before I picked up Lauren. Guilty indulgence - but I don't get to do those things anymore, so it felt like a total spa makeover.
Ian came downtown for the Simon party at 4pm yesterday. We had some drinks, played games, and ate lots of good food. Then we headed up to the North side to play games and hang out at Jillian's. I succeeded in beating Ian at a hunting game which was hilarious. Then we went to a comedy show at Morty's. It was so wonderful to have a date night! I realize that we have to start planning more of these nights together, now that Lauren is bigger.

Lots of things are going on with my friends this week! Ryan and Amanda are in New Orleans as we speak, checking out the French Quarter and deciding whether or not to move for his job. It's a great promotion and opportunity. I'm excited for them and the next chapter of their new life as they get married in May, so it's kind of fitting that they might start out on this new adventure together in a new city. I would be so sad to miss out on summer pool parties with Amanda, and all of our other fun times together with the girls, but Ian and I would definitely visit our favorite couple in the big easy!
Sara was in NYC this week, enjoying all of the sights like Rockefeller Center and Tavern on the Green! Tavern on the Green is closing it's doors soon - I made it one time and it was fabulous. It was everything I pictured it to be. Amanda and I took a trip there a while back, and I hope to go again to experience 5th Avenue, celebrity watching and the sights.
Courtney and Lance bought a new house this week, so I'm so happy for them! Their rugrats will have more room to run and she will be closer to work. I can't wait to see their new house. They have worked hard to get where they are at and I'm happy that it is all starting to pay off for them and their family. Congrats Court. Get having me over asap in your new house. :)
Chicago Jen is expecting a baby in June I found out this week as well. I am SO excited for Jen and Chris. I hope the world is ready for a little J-no!! Jen is one of favorite people and I'm so excited that she is going to join me in motherhood so we can share it all together. She is going to make a wonderful, wonderful mother.
So much going on with everyone. I love it. It seems like "30" is the magical year when everyone is doing very grown up things. :)
Signing off for now...baby is stirring...love, V :) ♥
